School Daze, Plugged In and Zoned Out

By Alan Caruba

The older you get the faster time seems to speed by. One minute you’re talking about the Baby Boom generation, 1946 to 1964, and the next it’s Generation X, 1965-1983. If the Boomers thought the…

Ignore the Law of Unintended Consequences at Your Peril (Part 1,304,002 in a Continuing Series)

As government programs go, "Cars for Clunkers" was a lemon. Unless, of course, you judge a program's success by Congress rushing to shift additional billions in "stimulus" funds to meet supposedly unexpected demand -- in that case it was a monster hit for the ages.

The program, which offered up to $4,500 toward purchasing a new car, was supposed to last a few months. Its funding was exhausted after just four days. That spurred Congress to appropriate another $2 billion from the $814… Continue

While high unemployment is a pressing problem, continuing to pile up federal debt by extending unemployment insurance will do little to improve the economy and… Continue

Chicago Politickin' Helped ShoreBank Survive

The survival of Clinton/Obama-favored ShoreBank (and its progressive agenda) can be attributed in part to the aggressive intervention of Chicago-area congressmen and power players, as…

Poor People have no Right to Healthcare

Hey, don't blame me, it's not my concept. It's an Obamism. And he's not alone in espousing that point of view either.

It's all very confusing, to me anyway. I mean, on the face of it, it seems that he and those of like mind are saying that "Health care is a right" for everyone, which of course includes the poor. But when you try to find quotes where he says that, you can only find him saying that "in a…

No Camera, No Debate, No Cameron

Myron Ebell of the Competitive Enterprise Institute last week gave thanks for his opponents in the global warming debate:

Former Vice President Al Gore is the gift that keeps on giving to opponents of global warming alarmism and energy rationing policies. He leads what I think of as the Dream Team: Gore is the public leader; James Hansen is the go-to scientist; Reps. Henry Waxman…

ShoreBank: Seized, Saved, Survives

On Friday the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation seized politically-connected ShoreBank, covered some of its losses, then handed it right back to the same management team with a new name: Urban Partnership Bank. Over at the National Legal and Policy Center Web site I dissect… Continue

Worthless Degrees, Now and Then

I have copied below an interesting article by Vedran Vuk. My apologies to those defined as having worthless degrees (my own degree, Biology, was not specifically mentioned. I switched from chemistry after one year, too hard). I was interested in the last paragraph-

"The far more interesting aspect of these charts is the graduates between 1980 and 1986. They are almost a forgotten great American generation. They had the lowest proportions of worthless majors. Business…

Mexico in 2010 is turning into Colombia in the 80's-90's

Where to begin.... Mexican police in Santiago murder their own mayor? That story is just from this weekend. How about 4 decapitated bodies hung from a bridge in Cuernavaca? That story is from yesterday. If you've followed the news at all you'll know that these two stories are just the tip of the… Continue

(Sunday, August 22) As this is being written, two rallies are being held in the pouring rain in New York, just outside the proposed site of the Ground Zero mosque. One represents people opposed to it…

Debunking Al Gore's claim that CO2, if not curtailed, will result in castrophic results for Mother Earth

An earlier Freedom Pub blog post about the frustration Al Gore is experiencing over climate change delay legislation was edited from a much larger article I wrote which, among other things, debunks CO2 as the cause of Global Warming.

In this unedited version, credit is given to The Heartland Institute's excellent Climate Change Conference of this past May. Emphasized is what Lord Christopher Monckton, featured speaker at the May Conference, had to say about the results to be gained… Continue

Is the public being duped into the acceptance of comprehensive Immigration Reform?

The issue of illegal immigration dominates much of my thinking, because it relates to the economy and our National Security.

In looking into the issue, I found much that I didn't like about how the issue of illegal immigration seems to be progressing toward amnesty without conditions and without the sealing of the U.S.-Mexican border.

This blog was written after I spoke with a friend who likewise fears that action must be taken or else total amnesty will be granted… Continue

Terrorist Attack On Japanese Oil Tanker In The Strait of Hormuz

Here is a letter sent to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution about the oil tanker attack in the Strait of Hormuz July 28 you will not see printed. A group calling itself the Abdullah Azzam Brigade claimed responsibility for the explosion saying one of its members died in the attack.
I have not seen any reference to the attack carried by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution or network TV since the initial report of the tanker being hit by an explosion or large wave. About 30 million…

My Commonwealth Foundation colleague Nathan Benefield calls attention to what was a potential showdown over hotel rooms between those frackin' Marcellus Shale natural gas explorers from outside of Pennsylvania, and the tourists who will soon be heading to Williamsport for the Little League World Series.
