Lawrence Summers In early April, the Energy Information Administration and School of Advanced International Studies hosted a Washington, DC conference addressing energy issues. Heartland Institute Policy Advisor Jim Johnston, who attended the event, said the speakers essentially "condemned energy use."

A New Era of Limits

Elsewhere and in a slightly different context, I've remarked how it feels like 1978 all over again. I was thinking about California, which stands poised to reelect Jerry Brown to the governor's office. (Don't be fooled by the polls -- it's early yet.) But I could have just as easily invoked the memory of Jimmy Carter. The snoops at… Continue

Cuttin' Christie: Skeptic or Alarmist?

George Will has a great column today about how New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is making difficult budget-cutting decisions that are drawing a lot of heat from government employee unions:

He inherited a $2.2 billion deficit, and next year's projected…

South Park, Blasphemy and the Ghost of Theo Van Gogh (Updated with comments from Parker, Stone, Ayaan Hirsi Ali and more)

I haven't watched the latest episode of South Park yet, but judging from last week's 200th episode controversy, I knew it would be radioactive. Sure enough, the New York Times reports:

An episode of “South Park” that continued a story line involving the Prophet…

When the Lights Go Down, It Ain't Pretty

The Drudge-linked CNSNews story about Nancy Pelosi's press conference to announce new $140,000 "green" lighting in the Rayburn Building House cafeteria reports the new fixtures "will take almost 10 years to pay off in saved energy:"

(Capitol architect Stephen Myers said,) "At $800 a fixture we can’t get a good return on investment, but when it gets down to $300 – and I’m sure it will go even lower – we’re able to…

Obama's Appearance on "Idol Gives Back"

Last night on the annual fund raising episode of American Idol ("Idol Gives Back",) President Obama and the first lady appeared at the beginning with an endorsement asking viewers to make a contribution. I was somewhat disturbed by this. Let me make my case--I'd love to have your feedback and/or insight.

It is completely within the parameters of our Constitution for private industry to undertake philanthropic endeavors. Personally, I think it is fantastic that American Idol seeks… Continue

Citizens United II: Revenge of the Censors

Greg Sargent reports that Democrats are amassing "bipartisan support" for legislation aimed at limiting the Supreme Court's small but vital affirmation of free speech in Citizen's United v. FEC. Murphy's decision to reject 235 of 274 premium hikes proposed by the insurers. The ruling could leave insurers with hundreds of millions in losses this year.

Treasury May Sell Record Amount of Notes, Primary Dealers Say

The U.S. Treasury may sell an unprecedented $128 billion in notes next week as expectations increase that the amount of securities auctioned by the government is peaking with the economy strengthening.

Celebrate Earth Day by Polluting the Air

That's not a joke. OK. It's kind of a joke to most of us around here. But it's not a joke at all to Science magazine correspondent Eli Kintisch who penned an oped for Sunday's Los Angeles Times. He warned that the great strides we've made in the last 40 years reducing air pollution is actually going to make global warming worse.

Please sit down…

About GM's claimed debt repayment

You may have seen the announcement yesterday by GM's CEO that it was paying back a portion of the money it had been loaned by the taxpayers (who borrowed it to loan it) to keep the company from going under and providing it the room for the government to own 61%.

The White House was…

The President utters those three fateful letters: V-A-T.

The really surprising thing about President Obama rolling the VAT hand gernade onto the table is his tone-deafness. The political calculus of rolling out a VAT in the midst of the current economic climate is incomprehensible. Sure, the US needs to find a way to… Continue
